UAE VAT Refund Guide for Tourists

The UAE VAT refund system helps tourists reclaim most of the 5% VAT charged on eligible purchases during their stay. Operated by Planet under authorization from the Federal Tax Authority, the program launched in 2018 and offers a fully digital, streamlined experience. Tourists can recover up to 87% of VAT paid, minus a Dh4.80 processing fee per transaction.

To qualify for the UAE VAT refund, purchases must total at least AED 250. Confirm with the store that it’s registered with Planet. Transactions can be paperless, with invoicing via SMS, or marked with a printed tax‑free tag if paperless isn’t available.

Once shopping, validate your purchases within 90 days of purchase date. Use self‑service kiosks or Planet counters at airports, seaports, or land border exits. Simply scan your passport or ID; a green light means validation succeeded, while a red light prompts staff help. After validation, select your refund method: cash in AED, credit/debit card, or WeChat where supported.

Documents and Tracking

To complete the UAE VAT refund, bring:

  • Valid passport,
  • Original tax invoice or digital receipt,
  • Your boarding pass or travel ticket.

If the retailer isn’t paperless, you must present both the physical receipt and tax‑free tag at validation. Otherwise, tracking through the Planet Shopper Portal is possible—even without the invoice, you can monitor your refund digitally using your phone number and passport details.

Essential Tourist Tips

  • Always verify Planet registration at stores to avoid missed refunds.
  • Ensure minimum spend of AED 250 in one transaction.
  • Validate all claims before checking in luggage.
  • Choose a refund method that suits your needs.

The UAE VAT refund system turns shopping into a tax‑free experience for visitors—fast, digital, and effortless. Whether you shop on-the-go or at malls, Planet’s platform ensures you can reclaim your VAT with ease.
