UAE Flight Refunds Amid Crisis: What Travellers Should Know

As conflict intensifies between Israel and Iran, many UAE flight refunds amid crisis are becoming complicated. Airlines have changed routes, cancelled flights, and updated schedules due to airspace closures and government warnings. The result is widespread disruption, confusion, and frustration among travellers. For many, this is when travel insurance should help—but war-related exclusions often prevent payouts.

More UAE residents now buy travel insurance, whether for visa reasons or peace of mind. Still, few read the fine print. Avinash Babur, CEO of InsuranceMarket.ae, explained that most policies exclude compensation if delays or cancellations result from war or civil unrest. These exclusions mean travellers are usually not protected when they need help most. Unless you’ve paid for a high-end or specialised policy, don’t expect coverage for crisis-related events.

Even with limited coverage for major disruptions, most insurance still pays for meals, hotel stays, or transport if a delay exceeds a few hours. The key is checking what the policy allows before departure. For larger issues like rerouting, travellers must often rely on their airline or local embassy.

Airlines that cancel flights due to the crisis generally offer full refunds or let passengers change dates. But there’s a catch. If the flight is still active and the passenger chooses to cancel for personal safety reasons, standard cancellation rules apply. Insurance also doesn’t cover this type of decision.

Tour operators and hotels have been more flexible. Many offer full refunds or allow free date changes. However, this applies mostly to bookings made directly. Travellers who booked online often face slower refund processes. They may need to chase platforms through emails and call centres to get results. Booking with a travel agent, though sometimes pricier, can save time and stress during a crisis.

Not all destinations are affected equally. Flights between the UAE and South Asia, especially to India, remain stable. Shamshudeen Perambil of Delta Destinations noted that European routes see more disruption, but these are often temporary. In some cases, airlines are even refunding non-refundable tickets to support their customers during these exceptional times.

The UAE flight refunds amid crisis situation remains fluid. Travellers should stay updated by checking airline websites and official government travel advisories. Reviewing your insurance policy and understanding what is—and isn’t—covered is essential. In unpredictable times like these, choosing flexible bookings, using reputable agents, and reading the fine print can make a significant difference.
