Nathan Ordaz Stuns Inter Miami with Late Winner for LAFC

Nathan Ordaz LAFC winner vs Inter Miami was the surprise headline from a glittering night at BMO Stadium, where stars filled the stands and Lionel Messi took to the field. With a fierce strike late in the game, the 21-year-old stepped into the spotlight and delivered LAFC a vital 1-0 victory over Inter Miami in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal.

The buzz began long before kickoff as celebrities like Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler, Becky G, Lionel Richie, and David Beckham added Hollywood glamor to the night. Yet, amid all the flashing lights, it was Ordaz, a young striker thrust into the starting lineup due to injuries, who proved to be the unexpected game-changer.

From the outset, Inter Miami controlled the tempo. Javier Mascherano’s team held 58 percent possession in the first half, pushing forward with patient buildup. But LAFC remained disciplined, shutting down any real goal-scoring opportunities. On the rare occasion Miami broke through, Hugo Lloris stood tall—denying Messi in their first meeting since Argentina defeated France in the 2022 World Cup final.

The match took a controversial turn midway through the first half. Ordaz appeared to elbow Miami defender Maximiliano Falcón twice and allegedly kicked him in a separate incident. Despite a thorough VAR review, the referee issued only a yellow card. For many, especially Miami fans, it was a decision that could have easily resulted in a red card. This raised eyebrows across the stadium and ignited a debate about officiating standards in key matches.

Having survived the first-half scare, Ordaz came back in the second half with a point to prove. In the 72nd minute, he found himself one-on-one with veteran Sergio Busquets, outpaced him, and fired a low rocket from outside the box that beat Oscar Ustari at the near post. It was a moment of pure individual brilliance from a player many believed shouldn’t have still been on the field.

Inter Miami tried to mount a late comeback, pressing high and launching waves of attack. But Lloris, along with a resolute LAFC defense, held firm. Every shot, cross, and set piece was either blocked, cleared, or confidently handled by the French goalkeeper, preserving LAFC’s narrow but crucial advantage.

For Inter Miami, the defeat echoed painful memories of last season’s playoff loss to Atlanta—dominating possession but falling short in execution. Messi showed flashes of brilliance but was effectively neutralized. Jordi Alba and Busquets struggled to match LAFC’s pace, particularly in the latter stages.

Now, all eyes turn to Chase Stadium, where Inter Miami will host the return leg. With a one-goal deficit, Mascherano’s team has a chance to bounce back, but they’ll need sharper finishing and defensive solidity to overturn the result. As for Ordaz, his performance—controversy and all—has added a dramatic twist to what could be a preview of the 2025 MLS Cup final.

Nathan Ordaz LAFC winner vs Inter Miami may not have been the storyline many expected, but it’s the one that now defines this high-stakes clash heading into the decisive second leg.
