Dubai Speed Limits and Radar Fines

Every driver in Dubai, whether experienced or new, must understand Dubai speed limits and fines. Dubai Police highlights two categories for road speeds: the posted road speed and the radar control limit. The road speed is the one shown on signs. The radar limit, however, is where speed cameras begin recording violations. The gap between these two is known as the grace speed limit, which often ranges from 20 to 30 km/h.

Speed limits in Dubai vary by road. For example, Al Nahda Road, Damascus Street, Al Quds Street, and Al Minaa Road all have a posted speed of 80 km/h. Cameras on these roads start recording at 101 km/h. Sheikh Khalifa Road, by contrast, has a lower speed limit of 70 km/h with radar enforcement starting at 91 km/h.

Some roads have variable speed limits across different stretches. Amman Street can be either 60 or 80 km/h depending on the area, with radar control set at 91 or 101 km/h. Similarly, Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Road allows speeds of 80 or 100 km/h, and radar enforcement begins at 101 or 121 km/h.

Fast-moving roads like Al Khail Road, Emirates Road, and Mohammad Bin Zayed Road are set at 100 or 110 km/h, with radar limits at 121 or 131 km/h. Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Yalayes Road allow up to 120 km/h in certain areas. On these stretches, cameras activate at 141 km/h.

Meanwhile, roads within the city, such as Al Wasl Road, Al Jumeira Road, and Oud Metha Road, usually carry lower speed limits. These often range from 60 to 80 km/h, with radars set to catch drivers at 91 km/h. Some roads, like Tripoli Street or Dubai-Al Ain Road, feature mixed zones. Limits here may switch between 90 and 120 km/h, while radar starts between 111 and 141 km/h.

Al Ittihad Road also varies. Some parts allow 80 km/h, while others permit 100 km/h. Accordingly, radar activation changes based on the stretch. Drivers must stay alert and follow updated signs, especially in mixed-limit areas.

Speeding beyond the radar limit leads to specific fines. Exceeding the limit by more than 80 km/h results in a Dh3,000 fine, 23 black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment. Crossing it by more than 60 km/h leads to a Dh2,000 fine, 12 black points, and 30 days of impoundment. Violations of up to 60 km/h bring a Dh1,500 fine, 6 black points, and 15 days of impoundment.

For minor excesses, fines reduce accordingly. Driving over the limit by up to 40 km/h incurs a Dh700 fine. A 30 km/h excess draws a Dh600 fine, and exceeding by 20 km/h results in a Dh300 charge. These smaller violations typically do not carry black points.

Staying informed about Dubai speed limits and fines is crucial. The grace margin may offer a buffer, but drivers shouldn’t rely on it. Monitoring road signs and understanding radar thresholds help avoid penalties and ensure safer travel across the city.
