The COMAC C919 has made its first appearance in the Middle East following the arrival of two aircraft at Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport on November 10. Their participation in the Dubai Airshow highlights COMAC’s drive to expand beyond the Chinese market and position the C919 as a competitive player in the global narrowbody segment. The aircraft will join other international manufacturers from November 17 to 21.
COMAC Showcases Multiple Aircraft
COMAC’s display includes two C919 passenger jets and a C909 in executive configuration. This selection aims to strengthen interest among airlines and private buyers across the region. One of the C919s features the manufacturer’s demonstrator in the COMAC Express livery, while the second aircraft, registered B-685X, is operated by China Southern Airlines. Because the Dubai Airshow attracts both commercial and government delegations, COMAC views the event as an important platform for broader exposure.
Growing International Visibility
The Dubai Airshow 2025 is expected to feature more than 1,500 exhibitors and welcome over 148,000 visitors. These conditions create an ideal setting for aircraft makers seeking new markets. COMAC’s participation signals its ambition to secure customers outside China, particularly as demand for narrowbody aircraft continues to rise in the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Competing with Established Western Models
The C919 was designed to rival the Airbus A320 family and the Boeing 737 series. COMAC has stated that it has accumulated more than 1,000 orders, although most commitments come from Chinese customers. Official figures show more than 300 firm orders from the country’s three major airlines, all of which are state-owned. These orders reflect strong domestic support as COMAC works to expand internationally.
Deliveries and Service Record
Since the C919 entered commercial service, it has completed 18 deliveries across Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines. Its first two years have focused on strengthening operational reliability and demonstrating performance in a variety of routes. Because new aircraft programs depend heavily on early service success, COMAC expects these milestones to support future export campaigns.
Strategic Importance of Dubai Airshow
Dubai’s selection as the site for the C919’s Middle East debut is a strategic choice. The region’s carriers continue to invest in fleet expansion, and Dubai South is rapidly becoming a global hub for aviation partnerships. Manufacturers from around the world use the event to announce orders, showcase new aircraft and form long-term alliances. COMAC’s presence signals confidence in the aircraft’s potential to appeal to operators seeking alternatives to traditional Western models.
