Israeli Strikes on Gaza Journalists Raise Global Alarm

1 min read

The escalating Israeli strikes on Gaza journalists have sparked urgent concern worldwide. Watchdogs warn that deliberate attacks on reporters threaten press freedom and violate international law.

Growing Fear Among Gaza Journalists

Journalists in Gaza, many working with Al Jazeera, say they now fear for their lives daily. Several reporters have received direct threats after Israeli officials and media linked them to Hamas. Some now hide their identities to stay safe.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned these actions, calling them information warfare. CPJ said Israel labels reporters as militants to justify attacks. Critics argue this tactic aims to silence the press while excusing war crimes.

Deadly Pattern of Targeting

The list of casualties grows. In August alone, nearly a dozen reporters died. Victims included Al Jazeera’s Anas Al-Sharif and Mariam Dagga of Independent Arabia. Others, such as Moamen Aliwa, Mohammed Qreiqeh, and Hossam Al-Masri, were also killed in airstrikes.

Rights groups reject Israel’s claim that journalists worked as Hamas operatives. They call the evidence fabricated. They also condemned the strike on the Nasser Medical Complex on August 25. That attack killed both medics and media workers in what critics call a “double tap” strike, designed to inflict maximum casualties.

Campaign to Discredit Journalists

Israeli outlet +972 reported the existence of a “legitimization cell.” This group allegedly framed Gaza journalists as militants to soften global outrage over their deaths.

One case stood out. Al Jazeera reporter Ismail Al-Ghoul died in July 2024 alongside his cameraman. Military files claimed he was a Hamas officer, but the documents showed glaring flaws — including assigning him ranks when he was only ten.

At least six Al Jazeera reporters have been targeted this way. Two — Al-Sharif and Hossam Shabat — were killed. Another, Ismail Abu Omar, survived but suffered critical injuries. The rest continue to live under threat while facing smear campaigns online.

Calls for Urgent Action

Press freedom groups, including CPJ, Amnesty International, and the UN rapporteur on freedom of expression, warn that Israel’s strategy is escalating. They stress that falsely labeling reporters as militants puts all media workers at risk.

Senior Al Jazeera anchor Tamer Almisshal said Israel blocks foreign reporters from entering Gaza while targeting locals. “They are trying to kill the only voices and eyes left,” he said.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is already reviewing several strikes, including the one that killed Al-Sharif. In November 2024, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, as well as Hamas commanders, on charges of war crimes.

A Direct Assault on Press Freedom

Journalists in Gaza say the attacks no longer feel exceptional. “We live in constant fear that we may be next,” one reporter said.

They called on the global community to hold perpetrators accountable and provide real protection. Without urgent action, the Israeli strikes on Gaza journalists may permanently silence the last voices documenting the conflict.
