Muscat, Oman | Sep 12, 2025 (The Arabian Wall Street) — A major step toward deepening Gulf energy cooperation has been announced with the signing of a $500 million interim financing deal between the GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) and Sohar International Bank. The agreement will finance the landmark Oman–Gulf electricity interconnection project, a strategic initiative designed to strengthen the region’s energy resilience and open new opportunities for power trade among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states.
The project involves the construction of a 400-kilovolt double-circuit transmission line stretching 530 kilometers. It will connect the Al-Sila station in the United Arab Emirates, owned by GCCIA, with a newly established Ibri station in Oman. Once completed, this vital corridor will seamlessly integrate Oman’s grid into the wider GCC power network.
Speaking at the signing, Eng. Mohsen bin Hamad Al-Hadhrami, Chairman of the GCCIA Board of Directors, described the project as a “qualitative leap” in regional power integration. He emphasized that Oman’s position as a pivotal hub for energy exchange would be significantly enhanced, cementing the Sultanate’s role in driving Gulf energy cooperation.
Beyond the financial scale, the interconnection reflects the strategic depth of Gulf integration. It is expected to lower costs, provide backup in emergencies, and unlock electricity trading opportunities that could benefit both producers and consumers across the region. The initiative also aligns with broader GCC efforts to ensure energy sustainability, reduce dependency on single markets, and prepare for rising electricity demand.
Industry analysts note that the agreement demonstrates how regional banks like Sohar International are positioning themselves as central players in financing critical infrastructure. Meanwhile, the GCCIA continues to spearhead projects that embody Gulf unity, linking economic development with strategic energy security.
As construction progresses, the Oman–Gulf electricity interconnection project is poised to become a cornerstone of regional integration, setting a new standard for cross-border energy cooperation in the Middle East.
