Saudi Arabia to Invest in Solar Desalination Project in Senegal
Saudi Arabia to invest in a solar desalination project in Senegal, alongside €250 million ($291.57 million) in additional development. The investment was announced by Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih. The 300-megawatt photovoltaic facility will power the desalination plant and other development initiatives.

Saudi Exports and Investments in Senegal
According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity, Saudi exports to Senegal reached SR9.21 million in February 2025. In comparison, imports totaled SR105,000, resulting in a positive trade balance of SR9.1 million. Al-Falih expressed confidence that the forum would lead to more investments and partnerships in Senegal, strengthening economic ties between the nations.
Renewable Energy and Desalination Projects
One key project is the Grande-Cote seawater desalination initiative. ACWA Power has agreed to invest nearly €750 million to build a renewable energy-powered desalination plant. This facility will provide up to 400,000 cubic meters of potable water daily to Dakar and surrounding areas. The plant aims to address water scarcity while advancing Senegal’s environmental and energy goals.
Saudi Arabia’s Vision for Africa
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s $25 billion commitment to investments across Africa highlights Saudi Arabia’s growing role in the continent’s development. The solar desalination project in Senegal reflects this vision. It strengthens the relationship between Saudi Arabia and Senegal while addressing water-related challenges in the region.
