Dubai will soon launch the Glydways autonomous transit network. Mark Seeger, CEO of Glydways, announced the first phase will start within four months.
Glydways is a San Francisco-based company. It builds personal rapid transit systems that offer private, non-stop rides. Unlike buses or trains, these pods go directly from one station to another. As a result, they cut travel time and reduce traffic.
Moreover, they give people a clean, convenient alternative to driving alone. This supports Dubai’s goal to make 25% of all trips autonomous by 2030.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has already tested air taxis and RoboTaxis. Now, it adds Glydways to its smart mobility mix. In fact, this system complements—not replaces—existing public transport.
The first phase will serve four key areas:
- Bluewaters: A route will link National Paints Metro Station to Bluewaters Island.
- Umm Suqeim: Riders can go straight from Mall of the Emirates Metro Station to Madinat Jumeirah.
- Al Quoz: The line will run from OnPassive through Alserkal Avenue to Times Square Centre.
- Dubai Festival City: Pods will operate inside the community, with a possible future link to the Metro Blue Line.
These routes solve the “last-mile” problem. For example, someone arriving at Mall of the Emirates station can take a Glydways pod directly to Madinat Jumeirah. They won’t need to wait for a taxi or walk far.
All pods run on dedicated guideways. They are fully electric and operate only when someone requests a ride. Because of this, energy use stays low and wait times stay short.
Additionally, the system avoids large fleets and bulky infrastructure. Instead, it uses small, efficient vehicles that scale with demand.
Critically, Glydways works with the metro—not against it. Therefore, more commuters may choose public transport over private cars.
RTA plans to expand the Glydways autonomous transit network as ridership grows. Future phases could connect seamlessly to the Metro Blue Line.
Ultimately, this project rethinks urban movement. It blends speed, sustainability, and convenience into one system. And for Dubai residents and visitors, smoother, smarter journeys are just months away.
