Tensions rise as ceasefire talks stall over key conditions

Ceasefire Talks Falter as Hamas Rejects Israeli Disarmament Proposal

Hamas has formally rejected a recent Israeli ceasefire proposal that demanded the militant group disarm in exchange for a six-week truce in Gaza. According to a senior Palestinian official involved in the talks, the Israeli offer failed to include key Hamas conditions—namely a complete end to the war and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

The rejection comes amid continued Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip, including a deadly airstrike on a field hospital in Khan Younis that killed one person and injured nine others. The Israel Defense Forces claimed the strike targeted a senior Hamas cell leader, but the attack has drawn international condemnation for hitting civilian infrastructure.

According to the UN, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached its worst level in 18 months. Aid deliveries have been blocked for six weeks—longer than at any previous time since the conflict escalated—raising concerns of starvation and medical supply shortages.

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu maintains that the blockade is necessary to pressure Hamas into releasing remaining hostages and extending the last ceasefire, which expired on March 1. However, the Israeli condition of Hamas disarmament, included for the first time in negotiations, was labeled a red line by Hamas.

“There was no promise to end the war or pull out troops,” said the Palestinian official, adding that the offer appeared to be more about hostage retrieval than peace. Hamas currently holds 59 hostages, of whom 24 are believed to be alive.

Tensions escalated further after Hamas claimed to have lost contact with the unit guarding U.S.-Israeli hostage Edan Alexander following an Israeli airstrike. Israel denied targeting known hostage sites.

Meanwhile, polls in Israel indicate strong public support for a ceasefire and hostage release deal. However, Netanyahu’s coalition, propped up by ultra-nationalist factions, opposes ending the conflict without dismantling Hamas entirely.

The situation has also sparked internal dissent within Israel, with reservists and veterans criticizing military leadership and the extended reserve duties. The lack of progress in drafting ultra-Orthodox citizens has further fueled public frustration.

With nearly 51,000 casualties over the past 18 months, including 1,630 deaths in the most recent round of violence, the Gaza conflict remains one of the most pressing humanitarian crises globally. The UN and international observers continue to urge both sides toward a durable, humane resolution—but for now, the political divide remains wide, and the suffering deepens.
