KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA – A humanitarian tragedy unfolded Tuesday as Israeli forces allegedly opened fire near an aid distribution point in southern Gaza, killing at least 51 Palestinians and injuring over 200 more, according to witnesses and Gaza’s civil defense agency.
The victims were among thousands of desperate civilians gathered east of Khan Younis, waiting for flour and food supplies from a World Food Programme (WFP) site that also serves as a community kitchen. The attack included drone strikes and tank shelling, according to eyewitnesses and local journalists.
Deadly Pattern Near Aid Sites
This is the latest—and reportedly deadliest—in a disturbing pattern of daily shootings near Gaza’s food distribution centers. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed a mass casualty event, with trauma doctors reporting mostly gunshot-related injuries.
Video verified by BBC Verify shows chaotic scenes in Khan Younis shortly after the strikes. Gaza’s civil defense spokesperson Mahmud Bassal stated, “Israeli drones fired at citizens, followed minutes later by several tank shells.”
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged reports of fire near an aid truck stuck in the area and stated the incident is under review. However, the IDF also noted that its troops were operating in the vicinity and had warned civilians to avoid certain zones.
Nasser Hospital Overwhelmed
The wounded flooded Nasser Hospital, the main medical facility still operating in the area. Medical staff described conditions as “dire,” with patients lying on the floor due to shortages in beds, supplies, and personnel.
The hospital has been under extreme pressure for weeks, as most recent casualties have resulted not from active strikes on Hamas but from clashes during food distribution. Aid has become a lifeline—and a danger—for Gaza’s starving population.
Humanitarian System Breakdown
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)—an Israeli- and US-backed initiative—has struggled to maintain order at its aid sites. Video footage from multiple locations shows uncontrolled crowds rushing food trucks in the absence of adequate security.
The IDF has advised Palestinians not to gather between 18:00 and 06:00, but many have no choice but to arrive early or stay overnight to get basic rations.
Despite the GHF distancing itself from these fatal incidents, critics argue the new aid system has collapsed, exposing civilians to extreme risk and facilitating displacement from northern Gaza.https://www.bizmart.ae/2503/israeli-forces-kill-23-palestinians-near-gaza-aid-site-gaza-aid-site-shooting-israel-kills-23/
Global Outcry and No Clear Solutions
UN human rights chief Volker Turk has accused Israel of “weaponizing food” and demanded an investigation. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini added that while international focus drifts, Gaza’s tragedies continue “unabated.”
Since the war began in October 2023, over 55,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to local health authorities. The aid delivery system, meant to be a humanitarian bridge, has instead become another deadly front in a protracted conflict.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbQDgxDy95w
