Saad Ibrahim Almadi, a US-Saudi citizen, has been allowed to return to Florida after being jailed in Saudi Arabia for criticizing the government on social media. The 75-year-old retired engineer was arrested in 2021 upon arriving in Riyadh to visit family. He was sentenced to 19 years in prison for tweets deemed to destabilize the kingdom and support terrorism. After being released early in 2023, he was still prevented from leaving Saudi Arabia.
US Citizen Jailed in Saudi Arabia Returns Home
Almadi’s return to the US was made possible through the efforts of President Donald Trump and his administration. The announcement came a day after Trump hosted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the White House. Almadi’s son, Ibrahim, expressed relief, stating that the family’s “horrific” four-year ordeal had finally ended, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Trump administration and US government officials.
Almadi’s case highlighted the issue of free speech, with his family thanking journalists from The Washington Post and The New York Post for ensuring his story reached the world. Almadi’s son had previously posted on social media, indicating that his father’s release was contingent on the successful visit of MBS to the US.
A Symbol of Diplomatic Pressure
Almadi’s arrest and subsequent detention were linked to 14 tweets criticizing various aspects of Saudi governance, including concerns about poverty and references to the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The US’s role in securing his release underscores the influence of diplomatic negotiations in addressing human rights issues.
This case is one of many that highlight the ongoing struggles for free speech in regions with repressive governments. Despite being released from prison, Almadi’s family continues to advocate for those still facing injustice in Saudi Arabia and other countries.
