Trump Threatens Tariffs on European Allies Amid Escalating Greenland Dispute

US President Donald Trump has sharply escalated tensions with key European allies after pledging to impose sweeping tariffs on countries opposing Washington’s bid to acquire Greenland. The move marks an unprecedented step in transatlantic relations, transforming a long-running diplomatic dispute into a potential trade conflict that could strain NATO unity and global markets.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the United States would introduce 10 percent tariffs starting February 1 on eight European countries—Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. He added that the tariffs would rise to 25 percent by June 1 unless an agreement is reached allowing the US to purchase Greenland, the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

Greenland at the Centre of a Growing Transatlantic Rift

Greenland, which governs most of its domestic affairs but remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark, has long been viewed by US strategists as geopolitically vital due to its Arctic location. Trump has repeatedly argued that American control of the island is essential for national and global security, particularly in light of growing competition in the Arctic and plans for a future US missile defence system he refers to as the “Golden Dome”.

Trump claimed the US has sought to buy Greenland “for over 150 years” and accused European governments of playing a “very dangerous game” by opposing US ambitions while engaging with Greenland diplomatically. He suggested that recent visits by European officials to the island were aimed at undermining American interests.

Tariffs as a Tool of Geopolitical Pressure

The tariff threat represents a dramatic departure from traditional US diplomacy with its closest allies. Trade measures have typically been reserved for rivals or competitors, not NATO partners. According to analysts, Trump’s strategy appears designed to force European governments to reconsider their stance by leveraging economic pressure.

Reporting from Washington, Al Jazeera correspondents described the move as an extraordinary escalation that signals Trump’s willingness to weaponise trade against allies in pursuit of strategic objectives. If implemented, the tariffs could disrupt supply chains, raise costs for consumers, and provoke retaliatory measures from Europe.

Protests Erupt in Denmark and Greenland

Trump’s announcement came amid widespread protests across Denmark and Greenland, underscoring public resistance to the idea of US control. In Copenhagen, thousands of demonstrators waved Danish and Greenlandic flags, chanting slogans asserting Greenland’s identity and right to self-determination.

In Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, hundreds of residents marched through freezing conditions to affirm support for self-governance and reject external pressure. Local journalists noted that news of looming US tariffs heightened anxiety among protesters, who fear their small population has limited leverage against a determined superpower.

Polls consistently show overwhelming opposition within Greenland to joining the US, with more than four-fifths of residents rejecting the idea outright. Both Greenlandic and Danish leaders have reiterated that the territory is not for sale.

NATO Unity Under Strain

The tariff threat risks deepening what observers describe as an internal NATO crisis. The alliance, founded in 1949 to ensure collective security across Europe and North America, has already faced strains over defence spending, Ukraine, and relations with Russia and China.

By targeting multiple NATO members simultaneously, Trump’s move raises questions about alliance solidarity and trust. European diplomats have warned that turning a security disagreement into a trade confrontation could weaken coordination at a time of heightened global instability.

A bipartisan US congressional delegation visiting Copenhagen attempted to reassure Danish and Greenlandic officials of continued American respect and partnership. Senator Chris Coons emphasised the historical cooperation between the US and Denmark within NATO, even as tensions with the White House persist.

Strategic Stakes in the Arctic

Beyond trade and diplomacy, the dispute reflects intensifying competition in the Arctic. Melting ice has opened new shipping routes and access to natural resources, drawing increased attention from global powers. The US views Greenland as a critical node for monitoring the Arctic and North Atlantic, as well as for missile defence and early warning systems.

Denmark has sought to reassure Washington that it takes Arctic security seriously and is willing to enhance cooperation. However, officials have acknowledged privately that they have been unable to shift the US administration’s position, even after high-level talks in Washington with Marco Rubio.

Uncertain Path Ahead

For now, European governments have not formally responded to Trump’s tariff announcement, but diplomatic efforts to de-escalate are expected to intensify. Analysts warn that if the tariffs take effect, the dispute could spiral into a broader trade war, complicating cooperation on security, climate policy, and global economic stability.

As Trump continues to frame Greenland as non-negotiable for US interests, the standoff highlights a broader shift in American foreign policy—one willing to challenge allies as aggressively as adversaries. Whether the tariff threat will force concessions or harden resistance across Europe remains an open question, but the episode has already exposed deep fault lines in the transatlantic relationship.
