Netanyahu Pushes for Full Gaza Hostage Deal

Gaza hostage deal

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signalled a major shift in Gaza ceasefire negotiations, indicating that talks now centre on securing a Gaza hostage deal that would see all remaining captives — alive and dead — released at once. This approach replaces earlier proposals for a phased 60-day truce with a partial hostage release.

Hamas has confirmed that its delegation is in Cairo for preliminary talks with Egyptian mediators, while reports suggest a rare diplomatic opening in the coming weeks. Regional negotiators, including Egypt and Qatar, are exploring a comprehensive deal that would end the war, secure the hostages’ release, and see Israeli forces withdraw from Gaza. However, Israel insists that Hamas must relinquish its weapons and control of the territory, conditions that remain a sticking point.

Despite ongoing mediation efforts, Israel has intensified its military campaign. Strikes on Gaza City have escalated, with hospitals reporting multiple civilian deaths, including children. The Hamas-run health ministry claims at least 123 Palestinians were killed in the past day, while UN agencies warn of worsening famine and malnutrition.

Netanyahu is under mounting pressure from both international allies and hostage families to prioritise an agreement. In a televised interview, he dismissed the idea of a partial truce, stating: “I want all of them.” He has also reiterated controversial proposals for “voluntary” Palestinian emigration from Gaza, prompting fears of forced displacement reminiscent of the 1948 Nakba.

Hamas maintains that any hostage release must be part of a broader arrangement involving prisoner exchanges, a complete Israeli pull-out, and the creation of an independent Palestinian state. It refuses to disarm without such guarantees.

While Netanyahu insists that Israel’s security control over Gaza must continue indefinitely, the urgency of the Gaza hostage deal is growing. With around 50 hostages still in captivity — 20 believed alive — and military preparations for a new offensive reportedly underway, the coming weeks could decide whether diplomacy or escalation defines the next stage of the conflict.
