US Blocks Gaza Ceasefire Resolution at UN
US vetoes Gaza ceasefire,For the sixth time, the US has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages. The draft resolution, which had the support of all 14 other members of the Security Council, expressed deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging Israel to lift aid restrictions.
US Deputy Middle East envoy Morgan Ortagus defended the veto, stating that the resolution failed to condemn Hamas sufficiently and did not acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense. The veto comes amid an ongoing military offensive in Gaza, with Israel continuing to push deeper into Gaza City.
Global Disappointment and Divisions
The veto was met with disappointment from several nations, with Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour describing it as “deeply regrettable and painful.” Other members of the Security Council, including Pakistan and Algeria, voiced strong opposition to the US position, highlighting the suffering of civilians in Gaza.
This decision precedes the UN General Assembly, where the situation in Gaza is expected to be a major topic. As US allies, including the UK, are likely to recognize Palestinian statehood, the veto further isolates the US on the global stage.
