Israeli airstrike Yemen

An Israeli airstrike has struck Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, killing at least eight people. The attack, considered the most powerful strike by Israel in Yemen, targeted military and security sites controlled by the Houthi movement, which has been engaged in ongoing attacks on Israel.

Retaliation for Houthi Drone Attacks on Israel

The airstrike was a direct response to Houthi drone attacks on Israel. On September 24, 2025, Israeli military aircraft launched a series of bombings on several locations in Sanaa, including Houthi military compounds and intelligence facilities. The Israeli government said the strikes were aimed at eliminating terrorist targets used to plan attacks on Israel.

The Houthi-run health ministry condemned the attack, labeling it a “brutal crime” that targeted civilian facilities and residential buildings. Eight people died, and more than 140 were injured, including civilians. In a statement, the ministry criticized Israel for what it called a “systematic” attack on non-combatant areas.

Background: Houthi Attacks and Israeli Retaliation

The Houthis, an Iran-backed militant group, have been launching drones and missiles toward Israel since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, expressing their support for Palestinians. The Houthi movement seized much of north-western Yemen nearly a decade ago, plunging the country into civil war.

Israel has responded with airstrikes targeting Houthi military infrastructure in Yemen. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reiterated that the airstrikes were necessary for the defense of Israel and its people from repeated drone threats. Israel’s defense system intercepted most of these attacks, though some have breached defenses, resulting in casualties.

International Condemnation and Calls for Peace

This escalation has garnered international attention, with United Nations officials and various governments calling for an immediate ceasefire and a reduction in military action. Saudi Arabia has expressed concern over the conflict and warned of further instability if Israel proceeds with annexation plans for the West Bank.

As the tensions continue, global leaders are calling for peace talks to address both the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and the broader regional instability caused by groups like the Houthis.
