Israel has confirmed the identification of the Thai hostage body identified in Gaza. The remains of Suthisak Rintalak, a 43-year-old agricultural worker, were recently returned to Israel. He was one of the last two deceased hostages held in Gaza after the deadly Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023.
Rintalak’s Remains Handed Over via Red Cross
Rintalak’s body was handed over to Israel via the Red Cross on Wednesday, after Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) announced that they had found the remains in northern Gaza. The Israeli authorities will now work with the Thai embassy to repatriate the body.
The Ongoing Efforts to Recover All Hostages
The return of Rintalak’s body marks a crucial development in the ongoing recovery of hostages. Despite receiving the remains of 23 Israeli hostages and several foreign nationals, including two Thais, the body of the last hostage, Israeli police officer Ran Gvili, remains in Gaza. Israel has urged Hamas to make efforts to return his remains, continuing diplomatic pressure on the situation.
The Diplomatic Context and Challenges
The return of hostages’ remains follows a U.S.-brokered ceasefire deal. However, Israel has criticized Hamas for delaying the return of bodies, a situation that has complicated the second phase of the peace process. This phase includes issues of governance and the disarmament of Hamas.
Israeli and Thai Cooperation
Israel’s prime minister’s office stated that they are working with Thai authorities to ensure Rintalak’s remains are returned to his family. Meanwhile, the efforts to bring peace to the region continue, despite ongoing challenges and the complex diplomatic relationships at play.
