Tensions Soar as Israeli Airstrike Kills Four in Beirut Despite Ceasefire

1 min read

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, a powerful Israeli airstrike struck Beirut’s southern suburbs, killing four people and injuring seven, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. The attack targeted the Dahieh neighborhood—a known Hezbollah stronghold—shattering the fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Lebanese militant group.

The Israeli military claimed responsibility for the strike, stating it was aimed at Hassan Ali Mahmoud Bdeir, a senior Hezbollah operative accused of working with Hamas to orchestrate an imminent terror attack on Israeli civilians. The military justified the move, calling it a necessary step to neutralize a direct threat.

Footage from the aftermath showed the top floors of a residential building ripped apart, debris scattered across the street, and shocked residents scrambling through the rubble.

Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun slammed the airstrike, describing it as a “dangerous provocation,” while Prime Minister Nawaf Salam denounced it as a “blatant breach of the ceasefire.” The overnight strike follows another Israeli attack just days ago, marking the second offensive on Beirut since the November truce took effect.

Hezbollah has yet to officially respond, but previously insisted it remained committed to the ceasefire, even after Israel launched near-daily raids on southern Lebanon. Tensions have been high since Hezbollah launched a military campaign in solidarity with Gaza following the October 7 Hamas attacks on southern Israel.

The broader conflict has left deep scars: more than 4,000 Lebanese—many of them civilians—have lost their lives, and over 1.2 million have been forced to flee their homes. Israel says its military actions aim to ensure the safe return of its own displaced citizens and to push Hezbollah forces away from its northern border.

As international observers warn of a potential resurgence of war in the region, the latest strike raises urgent questions about the durability of the ceasefire and the direction of Israeli-Hezbollah relations.
