Displaced Gazans rain impact,Severe weather has added to the already dire conditions of displaced Gazans, with heavy rains and strong winds causing further damage to shelters and belongings. The United Nations has raised alarms about the worsening situation, which has affected over 55,000 families in the Gaza Strip. The flooding and cold temperatures are creating urgent health risks, particularly for children.

Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Damage to Shelters

Displaced Gazans rain impact,In the past week, downpours have flooded more than 40 emergency shelters in Gaza, forcing families to relocate yet again. Jonathan Crickx, spokesperson for UNICEF, described the conditions as “horrendous,” with 15cm (6 inches) of standing water near his office. Many families living in tents and makeshift shelters are now at serious risk of hypothermia and other illnesses due to prolonged exposure to the wet and cold conditions.

Fatalities and Growing Concern for Children’s Safety

Tragically, a baby died from hypothermia, and at least 11 others have perished as buildings collapsed in the severe weather. Hamas-run health authorities have warned of additional fatalities, as damaged structures in Gaza continue to crumble under the pressure of the storms. UNICEF has been distributing winter kits, blankets, and tents, but Crickx stresses that the aid provided so far is insufficient for the scale of the crisis.

Ongoing Challenges and International Calls for Action

With temperatures plunging to around 7°C (45°F) at night, the situation is rapidly deteriorating. UN agencies and humanitarian organizations are working to increase aid, but the need far exceeds the available supplies. Many displaced families, particularly in the Sanaag region, are struggling to stay dry and warm amidst the relentless rain.

The UN has called for increased and sustained humanitarian assistance to address both immediate needs, like shelter and clothing, as well as long-term recovery for Gaza’s infrastructure. The situation remains critical, and efforts to assist the displaced Gazans are ongoing, with calls for global solidarity in responding to the crisis.
