Egyptian-American Democrat Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s US Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the chamber and preserving a key seat for Democrats.
NBC News projected that El-Sayed defeated former Republican congressman Mike Rogers. The Associated Press also called the contest in his favour, according to Michigan public broadcaster WKAR. He will succeed retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. www.nbclosangeles.com
Addressing supporters in Detroit early on November 4, the 42-year-old celebrated a result that followed an intensely divisive campaign.
“Michigan, we did it!” he said, describing himself as honoured to become the state’s senator-elect.
A historic result for Muslim American representation
El-Sayed’s election marks a first for the US Senate, the upper chamber of Congress. Muslim Americans have previously served in the House of Representatives.
The result also keeps the Michigan seat in Democratic hands. It is a Democratic hold, rather than a seat taken from Republicans.

Final certification remains part of the election process, separate from news organisations’ race projections.
Healthcare affordability anchored his campaign
El-Sayed placed healthcare costs at the centre of his appeal to voters.
Drawing on his medical and public health background, he advocated universal healthcare through Medicare for All and argued that people should be able to obtain treatment without facing overwhelming bills.
His economic message also focused on reducing the influence of wealthy interests in politics and easing financial pressure on households.
That approach positioned him firmly within the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. His campaign sought to translate those priorities into practical concerns about medical care, personal finances and political accountability.
The victory gives progressives a prominent statewide success, although implementing his proposals will require support from other lawmakers.

Haley Stevens’ late endorsement tested party unity
El-Sayed faced a significant challenge in the campaign’s closing days when Democratic Representative Haley Stevens endorsed Rogers.
Stevens had lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed and had previously pledged to support him. Her decision to cross party lines exposed divisions that persisted beyond the nomination contest.
According to NBC News, disagreements over Israel and tensions with El-Sayed’s campaign contributed to the break.
Despite the endorsement, Rogers did not secure the Republican pickup his party had sought.
El-Sayed overcame attacks on his faith
Religion became a recurring flash point during the race.
Trump and other Republicans questioned El-Sayed’s loyalties and sought to associate him with extremism. El-Sayed rejected allegations linking him to the Muslim Brotherhood.
Reuters reported that those allegations lacked supporting evidence. Democrats condemned the attacks as Islamophobic. www.reuters.com
El-Sayed responded by emphasising his commitment to the United States and returning to his campaign’s healthcare and economic priorities. His election-night remarks presented the outcome as a rejection of the hostility directed at him.
What happens next?
El-Sayed is expected to take office when the new congressional term begins in January 2027, following completion of the election process.
He will inherit the responsibility of representing all Michigan residents, including those who supported Rogers. His priorities on healthcare, household costs and political financing will then move from campaign proposals into legislative negotiations.
For Michigan, the result preserves Democratic representation in the open seat. For the Senate, it brings a historic expansion of representation and a new member whose campaign was built around his experience in medicine and public health.
