Professor Abbas El Gamal Wins 2025 Great Arab Minds Award

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum has named Professor Abbas El Gamal the winner of the 2025 Great Arab Minds Award in Engineering and Technology. This honor recognizes one of the Arab world’s most influential contributors to modern digital communications.

Sheikh Mohammed announced the news on his X account. He said, “Today we announce the winner of the Great Arab Minds Award in Engineering and Technology for 2025: Professor Abbas El Gamal, Hitachi America Professor at Stanford University.”

He went on to praise El Gamal as a global authority in Network Information Theory. Moreover, he noted that El Gamal’s research laid the groundwork for today’s communication systems. “We congratulate him,” Sheikh Mohammed added, “and celebrate Arab minds whose innovations serve humanity.”

Indeed, El Gamal’s work has shaped how the world transmits and processes digital information. For decades, he has advanced the science behind data flow in networks. Specifically, his theories guide everything from mobile internet to satellite links.

In addition, he played a vital role in developing Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). These chips are now used in computing, aerospace, and smart devices. Because of his routing breakthroughs, FPGA design became faster and more efficient.

Furthermore, El Gamal helped pioneer CMOS image sensor technology. As a result, smartphone cameras and digital imaging systems improved dramatically. His contributions enabled clearer, faster, and more affordable imaging worldwide.
